อิรุมิเป็นลูกชายคนโตของตระกูล Zaoldyeck เป็นพี่ชายของคิรัวร์ เขาเป็นนักฆ่าที่ไร้หัวใจ เขาสั่งสอนคิรัวร์ให้เป็นเหมือนเขาด้วย แต่คิรัวร์ไม่ต้องการและเขาอยากจะมีเพื่อน ซึ่งเป็นข้อห้ามของนักฆ่า "นักฆ่าไม่จำเป็นต้องมีเพื่อน" เป็นสิ่งที่อิรุมิและครอบครัวสั่งสอนคิรัวร์ไว้ ซึ่งนั่นทำให้คิรัวร์ลองฝ่าฝืนข้อห้ามของครอบครัวออกมาผจญโลกภายนอกและเขาเองก็ลงสมัครสอบเป็นฮันเตอร์ ในปีเดียวกับที่กอร์นสมัครด้วย

แต่เค้าสนิทกับฮิโซกะ(ไม่รู้ว่าในฐานะเพื่อนหรือผู้จ้างวานฆ่ากันแน่ -*-) แต่ถึงอิรุมิจะพูดอย่างนั้นอย่างนี้แต่เค้าก็สนิทกับฮิโซกะที่สุดอยู่ดี
Irumi, sometimes alternately caled as Illumi or Yellmi, is the eldest son of the Zaoldyeck family of assassins. He is brother to Killua, one of the primary characters of Hunter X Hunter, as well as to Miruki, Karuto and Aruka.
He initially made his appearance as the robot-like Kitara-kuro during the Hunter Exam. It was revealed that he joined this venture in disguise so as to keep close watch over his younger brother [Killua, of course] at the behest of their mother, Kikyou. Irumi's distinguishing features include his tall, slender frame and long, lustrous dark brown hair. Most exceptional of all are his dark, bottomless eyes. His normally graceful gait belies his deadly speed in the kill. He uses small but lethal pins in dispatching opponents; he is also a user of Nen in the Sousa or Control type of Hatsu.
